Course Description

The VCTA - Application Modernization certification validates a candidate's awareness of the VMware Tanzu Portfolio and the candidate's ability to understand and explain application modernization with the VMware Tanzu Portfolio.

Recommended Experience: The minimally qualified candidate (MQC) has basic experience in cloud computing, virtualization, Linux, and containers, and Kubernetes (K8S).

  • Installation, configuration, and setup
  • Optimization and performance-tuning
  • Troubleshooting
  • Administration


To prepare for this credential, individuals should visit the VMware Customer Connect Learning hub to explore relevant prep materials, including videos, courses, and recorded webinars.

You can take this VCTA exam at either a Pearson VUE test center or at a home, office, or work location using the Pearson OnVue remote proctored solution. When registering for the exam, you will have the option of selecting your preference.

Who should complete this credential?

If you’re already familiar with the cloud and network and/or data center virtualization, the Application Modernization credential can provide you with the know-how to scale and manage cloud systems.

This credential is best suited for early to mid-career IT professionals, or students familiar with cloud computing principles, who can perform basic navigation of the Tanzu Mission Control interface and identify its key components.

These individuals must also be able to perform basic commands with the Kubectl and TKG Command Line Interface utilities, along with having the ability to identify the primary components and features of VMware Tanzu Observability, Tanzu Service Mesh, Tanzu Build Service, Tanzu Application Catalog, and Tanzu Application Service.

Associate-level training will provide you with the skills and understanding you need to complete tasks typically encountered as a technician, or as a technical specialist in this field.

Step-by-Step Guide to Begin Credential

Once you’ve had time to review the credential prep material and feel confident in your abilities, complete the following steps to obtain the credential:

  • Visit VMWare Learning and create an account
  • Once completed, you will be prompted to sync your Pearson VUE account and MyLearn Account to complete the credential sign up
  • Once you confirm single-sign-on, select the course and how you’d like to proceed
